About the Item

A medium oval wall sculpture by French artist Roger Desserprit. This bas-relief, crafted of concrete, has a surface finished in white cement plaster. Abstract floral motifs and intricate texture make it interesting from every angle. Signed and dated “85 AD” lower left. Roger Desserprit (1923-1985) was a multifaceted artist, creating sculptures in concrete, bronze, metal, and wood, while also working as a painter. Known primarily for his abstract style, he occasionally produced figurative sculptures on commission. His works are included in private collections across France and Italy and are exhibited at renowned institutions like the Grenoble Museum, the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, and the Musée des Ursulines in Mâcon. Desserprit began his career with a debut exhibition at Galerie Colette Allendy and participated in the 1949 Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, forging connections with prominent artists of his time. Influenced by the Madi movement, initiated by Carmelo Arden-Quin and Gyula Kosice, Desserprit embraced “concrete” painting, focusing on the creation of a new reality through tangible space and light. In a 1951 manifesto published in Art d'Aujourd'hui, he called for art that transcended abstraction, engaging with the three-dimensional space in a direct and physical way. This innovative approach to form and light positioned Desserprit as a significant figure in the evolution of modern art. Great vintage condition. Signed and dated lower left. Hardware on the backside for hanging.
