About the Item

An important and most impressive pair of Roman late 17th/early 18th century Baroque Period Marble crest/plaques. Each stunning rectangular shaped marble plaque is designed in the style of an Italian noble family crest, and set within a mottled Gris St. Anne marble frame. An intricately carved Rais de Coeur border surrounds each of the marble crests, which showcase scrolls at the base below a red Breccia marble roundels implying a pilgrimage in heraldic tradition. At the center of the crests are exquisitely detailed diagonal Sienna marble mosaic bands which represent protection, while the mosaic star above symbolizes divine guidance. Above are large scale seashell carvings showcased on a marble mosaic background following the shape of the crests. Each plaque is suspended from its original scrolled Iron hook.
