Rare Imperial Russian Bronze Eagle Plaque by Henry-Bonnard & J.F. Zimmerman & Co

About the Item

Rare Imperial Russian-Style Bronze Double-Headed Eagle Plaque by Henry-Bonnard and Dresden Foundry, 1885 An exceptional late 19th to early 20th century cast bronze heraldic wall plaque, depicting the double-headed eagle of the Russian Empire, richly detailed and masterfully crafted. This rare and visually striking piece represents a unique collaboration between two historic foundries—The Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company of New York and the J.F. Zimmerman & Co. Foundry of Dresden, Germany. The design features the iconic double-headed eagle with widespread wings, crowned heads, and imperial regalia, including an orb, scepter, and halberds. A blank central escutcheon suggests the plaque was intended for a custom inscription or coat of arms, possibly for a consular or diplomatic setting. In one claw, the eagle grasps a medallion bearing the embossed elephant trademark of Zimmerman’s Dresden foundry, inscribed "FABRIK-ZEICHEN / CONZACTE LAFRENT / DRESDEN / BESONDERS GESCHÜTZT," translating to “Factory Trademark / Conzacte Lafrent / Dresden / Specially Protected.” The reverse is clearly stamped "THE HENRY-BONNARD BRONZE CO. / NEW YORK," 1885, a prominent American bronze foundry renowned for producing architectural and monumental bronzes during the Gilded Age. The combination of German and American marks suggests this was either cast in New York using a German mold or a collaborative production, making it a historically significant artifact. Dimensions: 15 in. high x 17 in. wide Material: Cast bronze with rich patina Origin: Germany/USA Dated: 1885 A rare decorative object with a strong imperial presence—ideal for collectors of heraldry, Russian history, or important bronze works.
