About the Item

These stunning Rene Boschmans for Coceram cubist-style figural ceramic plaques or wall tiles depict industrial, working, and sports scenes. The trio of artwork boasts a cubist design on shiny glazed ceramic, featuring industrial and Masonic symbolism. The first tile features a man straddling a cityscape and a farm field, holding a red flag with a raised masonic symbol. The second tile features a group of three men: two are dancing, and the third is playing the iconic French musical instrument, the accordion. The third tile features three men, two boxing fighters, and the referee. All three tiles have molded R. Boschmans's signature on the side. They also have a Coceram marking on the underside and a Masonic printed mark. Measurements: Tile 1: 10.44 in wide (26.5 cm) x 10.44 in high (26.5 cm). Tile 2: 10.63 in wide (27 cm) x 10.63 in high (27 cm). Tile 3: 10.82 in wide (27.5 cm) x 10.82 in high (27.5 cm). Note: measurements in item detail are for tile #3 alone. Reference: The Belgian company Faïencerie Coceram was established in 1947 and closed in 1960. Rene Boschmans (1913-1996) was a Belgian artist who worked with Coceram. He is known for monuments related to the celebration of socialist reform. Among is the 1959 Arthur Vanderpoort monument outside the Royal Athenaeum in Sint-Michiels, Belgium, near Bruges. This monument honors the man who enacted school reform.
