About the Item

Best known for sculpting the massive "Harvest" mural for the exterior of the main Food Building at the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair, as well as a series of bas relief sculptures in 1936 for the Texas Centennial Exposition, another World's Fair in Dallas, Pierre Bourdelle's works epitomize stylized Art Deco sculpture at its best. This unique, remarkable panel depicts four Zodiac symbols -- Taurus, Leo, Pisces and Libra -- in sculpted, glazed linoleum mounted on wood, using a process developed by Bourdelle and documented in an article published in Popular Mechanics in 1940. The Zodiac signs were given an old-gold gilding as well. Pierre was the son of Emile Antoine Bourdelle, who was famous for his "Archer" sculpture and participated in the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, which gave the Art Deco style its name.

"Zodiac w/ Helios and Cornucopia", Fabulous Art Deco Mural Study by Savage
By Eugene Francis Savage
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Painted by Eugene Savage -- arguably, America's most successful and prolific muralist in the Art Deco style, with important surviving paintings dating from the 1920s to the 1950s -- this study was made for a Zodiac-themed ceiling mural. The round painting features a night sky jeweled with bands of stars, and featuring several mythological figures such as Helios with his chariot and Cornucopia. Savage is best known for a spectacular set of murals illustrating the history and lore of Hawaii commissioned by Matson Shipping Line for the S. S. Lurline, executed in the 1940s but not installed until the 1950s. The artist also painted other series of murals and paintings, include an enormous mural...

"Lion and Bull", Art Deco-Medieval Decorative Painting in Greys and Burnt Sienn
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A marvelous example of Romanesque-Medieval bas relief sculpture interpreted by an American artist in the 1920s, this painting on fabric was executed by Dunbar Beck, the famous muralist. The painting, on one length of cloth, is in two parts -- one portion depicts a bull being attached by a lion, the other depicts a scrolling rope motif. According to a notation on the reverse, both paintings were done for a production of "Oedipus Rex," perhaps in California. Beck was an important muralist at this time, executing a mural for the US Post Office...
