"Weatherhead Award, " Rare Art Deco Bronze Panel for Excellence in Aerospace

About the Item

Sculpted by Walter Sinz, one of Cleveland's most celebrated sculptors in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, this rare bronze panel recognized leading manufacturers in the aerospace industry, in this case an aircraft electronics company in Philadelphia. Like a rocket exploding out of its launching pad, this panel depicts a nude female figure shooting into the sky, in classic Art Deco stylized form. Sinz designed the Thompson Trophy, awarded by one of the prominent air races in the 1930s, which probably led to the commission for the Weatherhead Award. Sinz also won a number of awards from the Cleveland Museum of Art before and after World War II, and was known for his medallic art and his three-dimensional sculptures, including bas reliefs for the West Side Market in Cleveland.
