A.W.N. Pugin Gothic Lily Wallpaper Rolls, Woollam & Co. of London, 1850

About the Item

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin created around one hundred wallpapers, which were manufactured and flocked by William Woollams & Co of London. Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin created around one hundred wallpapers, which were manufactured and flocked by William Woollams & Co of London. This appears to be an original 19th century woodblock printing. Almost 2 rolls, with original instructions. Exceedingly rare find of an iconic Gothic Revival design. The Wallpaper was designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812 –1852) was an English architect, designer, artist and critic with French and Swiss origins. He is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. His work culminated in designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster in Westminster, London, and its renowned clock tower, the Elizabeth Tower (formerly St. Stephen's Tower), which houses the bell known as Big Ben. Pugin designed many churches in England, and some in Ireland and Australia. He was the son of Auguste Pugin, and the father of Edward Welby Pugin, Cuthbert Welby Pugin, and Peter Paul Pugin, who continued his architectural and interior design firm as Pugin & Pugin. An architect by trade, Pugin hoped that by crafting interiors and exteriors reflecting the art of the Middle Ages, he could nudge Victorian society a little bit closer to a romanticized past. In 1836 Pugin published a book entitled Contrasts, which put forth an argument for a return to Medieval aesthetics and social structure. The book compared contemporary buildings against their Medieval counterparts. Though the comparisons were somewhat unfairly skewed in favor of the Middle Ages, the book made a lasting impression: Pugin’s celebration of all things Gothic is credited with inspiring the British Arts and Crafts movement, and the Medieval-style guilds established under its umbrella. The Wallpaper is heavy paper with no adhesive, there are about 2 rolls. The side edge appears to be made for overlapping.
