About the Item

This antique and charming early 20th Century scenic wallpaper by French Zuber manufacture is made up of five rolls of wall coverings hand painted with ancient wood blocks. The panels feature a Japanese landscape with characters dressed in traditional oriental clothes. This papier peint depicts a romantic panoramic outdoor scene set in a Japanese garden with a pond surrounded by rocks flowers and trees and features beautiful relaxing colors and calm tones such as cream color, light yellow, grey and many different shades of green. The sky has a magnificent shade in all its height ranging from intense yellow to pale pink and beige. Both the landscape and the figures are extremely detailed. The two female figures wear a kimono. An enchanting trompe l'oeil grisaille manufactured by Jean-Henri Zuber and designed by Arnold Stutz in 1902. Made up by five stripes of wall paper already mounted on three frames and ready to hang! The oriental and chinoiserie scenes were much loved and appreciated throughout the 19th Century. Very fashionable until the art nouveau and art deco period have inspired numerous creations. Our wallpaper is hand block painted. This technique is very refined, and consists in hand-pressing ancient inlaid blocks of wood (inlaid between 1797 and 1830). Those blocks of wood were soaked in color and then were hand-pressed on paper. For every different color, they had to use a new woodblock; that means that, to complete a scene, hundreds of woodblocks were needed. These wood prints are considered French Historical Monuments. Zuber has been creating handmade wallpapers since 1797. It still adheres to its 200-plus-year-old tradition of producing wallpapers with original, 17th, 18th and 19th century woodblocks, with some panoramas made up of more than 50 strips of paper and dozens of layers of color and each applied by hand. Zuber’s “printed frescoes” are loved by many people and decorate also the White House. This five rolls wall paper are mounted on three wood frames. Two panels have two rolls and one panel has one roll framed. We put each stripe of this gorgeous wallpaper on frame and we made mold and moth treatment to preserve it for years to come. Hang it on your home or put it directly on the wall for an exclusive eye-catching decorated wall vignette. This beautiful painting on paper could be used also to cover sliding doors or you can easily convert it into a screen or in an original room divider. Please note it's possible to remove the paper panels from the wood frames and ship them as rolls with frames disassembled for an easier, safer and cheaper transportation. The last picture shows the panoramic by Zuber at the White House. Measures: Height 276 cm, Total Width 235 cm (2 panels 94 each, 1 panel 47 cm width.)
