March 16, 2025Like many designers, Meghna Patel, owner of the Chicago jewelry atelier Meghna Jewels, took a circuitous route to her chosen métier. After receiving a degree in business administration from the University of Illinois Chicago, she had a brief career in the corporate world. “But I have always been an artistic person, and launching my own jewelry line was a natural extension of that,” she says. “It was not driven by a family business or parent company but rather by my own vision and instincts.”
For the first 15 years of her life, Patel lived in Gujarat, India, an area known for its rich textile heritage. “I developed a deep appreciation for fashion and was often inspired by watching runway shows,” says the designer, whose family emigrated to the U.S. in 1992.
The first step on Patel’s creative journey was her launch of a fashion-jewelry line in 2011. It was carried by retailers that targeted the young and fabulous, like Calypso St. Barth; Fred Segal; and Sophie’s Closet. After the success of that line, she decided to pivot to fine jewelry made with gemstones in a riot of colors, Windex-blue paraiba tourmalines, icy blue aquamarines and fancy colored diamonds. The move, she says, “has given me the opportunity to focus more on the intricate designs and details of the jewelry,” she says. Appearances in top fashion magazines — and a growing celebrity following — are proof that she is on the right track.
“I have a vivid imagination and a natural ability to visualize designs long before they are brought to life,” Patel says. A production team of highly skilled artisans based in Mumbai and Rajasthan execute her complex ideas, while Patel focuses on developing concepts and shopping for stones in destinations like Mumbai, Jaipur and Bangkok.
“I travel several times a year to personally source the gems so that each one meets my high standards, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of each piece,” she says.
Below, more from Patel on her passion for unique designs and extraordinary stones.
How is your heritage reflected in your collection?
My heritage has been a significant influence. Growing up, I was surrounded by vibrant colors and intricate details — whether in the beautifully handwoven saris my mother wore or in the lively celebrations of Diwali and Holi, both of which are filled with light and color. This deep connection to rich hues and traditional artistry naturally translates to my designs. I love incorporating vibrant gemstones in striking combinations.
How would you describe your jewelry?
Bold, beautiful, wearable. Each piece is designed to make a statement while maintaining timeless elegance and exceptional craftsmanship. I have a deep appreciation for all colorful gemstones, as each one carries its own distinct hues and meaning. The variety of colors — and the gemstones themselves — infuse my designs with joy. Life would be dull without color!
What is your design philosophy?
Jewelry is the ultimate finishing touch — across all cultures, it is what elevates an outfit. So each piece should be designed to make a lasting impression, and every detail should be deliberate and meticulously crafted. Two standout creations that embody this philosophy are the 6.37-carat oval Tanzanite ring and the Jumka Chandelier Earrings. These statement pieces exemplify the caliber of fine jewelry I create. The woman who wears Meghna Jewels is confident and unapologetic in her choices — she isn’t driven by fleeting fashion trends but rather by her own unique sense of style.
Is there one gem that you feel particularly connected to?
Our world-class collection features an array of rare and exquisite stones, including Paraiba tourmalines, exceptional emeralds and luxe sapphires. But if I were to choose one gem that resonates with the essence of the Meghna brand, it would be the tourmaline. It’s a stone that will help strengthen your spirit. It will ground you and help you conquer your fears and face situations that will challenge you.
You are clearly drawn as well to fancy color diamonds.
Yes, my passion for fancy color diamonds developed organically as I recognized a growing demand for them from my clients. In response, I expanded my collection to include GIA-certified rare fancy color diamonds (in addition to exceptional white diamonds). Loose gemstones actually play a significant role in my business — some collectors acquire stones for investment, while others seek to commission bespoke designs with me.
How do such custom design projects play out on 1stDibs, especially when all communication happens online?
We guide our clients through every step of the process. We offer detailed images, videos and GIA certificates to ensure that they have a clear understanding of every aspect of the stone before purchasing it. Then, we produce a CAD rendering to bring their ideas to life and work closely with our clients throughout the design stage, ensuring that every detail aligns with their expectations — if not surpasses them — before finalizing the piece. Our goal is to transform each gemstone into a masterpiece that reflects the individuality and style of its owner.
The Claw collection has become a signature for your brand. Kelly Osbourne was spotted wearing one of the pieces. Tell us about the inspiration for these unique designs.
“Get your claws on, and be fearless” is the mantra behind every piece, inspiring women to embrace their individual style and courageously chase their aspirations. The Claw collection also reflects my journey as a designer. When I ventured into jewelry design without a formal background, it was a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience. The signature pavé arches in the Claw collection symbolize strength and fearlessness, taking bold steps forward, embracing what you believe in and following your unique path. It’s a reminder to live authentically, take risks and commit to the pursuit of your dreams.
