About the Item
An antique yellow gold bangle, with applied granulation and wirework in 18 karat yellow gold.
This glorious bangle is in the Etruscan revival style, which was in vogue throughout the Victorian era. The bangle is hinged, and is opened by way of a concealed clasp, which is opened by sliding up one of the finials, which releases the catch. One side of the bangle features lettering spelling ‘ROMA’ and the other side, ‘MARTIA’, which may either be a name, derived from the Roman god Mars (god of war) or in reference to the legion of the Roman Empire, Legio IV Martia. It is likely that this bangle was purchased on a grand tour trip, as a souvenir for a loved one. The bangle features tremendously fine wirework and granulation details, with borders of twisted rope, and a floral, fleur-de-lys-like detail, with elegant wirework and granulation. The bangle is complete with a bloomed finish, where the piece would have been dipped in a solution which dissolved the alloys in the gold, leaving a fine layer of pure gold, giving a luxurious look. The bangle is in good condition, with some wear to the bloomed finish, and a few tiny dings, but overall is in very good condition for its age, with no missing wirework or granulation. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The papal hallmark of the crossed keys under the mitre was in use between 1815 and 1870. Prior to this, the Papal States (Rome) had been under French domination, and in 1870 the Italy declared war on the Papal States, and a new hallmarking system was introduced in 1872.
The bangle measures 26.6mm wide at finials, and 16mm wide at the rest of the bangle. The bangle measures 7mm deep at finials, and 2.6mm deep at the rest of the bangle.

Victorian Etruscan Style 18K Gold 13ct Amethyst, Pearl & Black Enamel Bangle
Located in Staines-Upon-Thames, GB
An antique gold, amethyst, pearl and enamel bracelet set with a cabochon amethyst, one seed pearl and adorned with black enamel, crafted from 18 karat yellow gold.
The high domed amethyst cabochon is a beautiful lilac hue, which appears as a deep, luxurious, purplish red when viewed from certain angles, due to the foil backing on the stone. The amethyst has been adorned with a pale, lustrous pearl, set within a gold star. Surrounding the amethyst are concentric circles, of Etruscan design, which was at the height of fashion during the mid Victorian era. Twisted rope motifs, beading and a ring of black enamel adorn the centrepiece of this bracelet. The black enamel is in incredible condition for the age of the piece. The bracelet is further engraved with an intricate fan motif. The bracelet is hinged and is secured with a study clasp. The bracelet is in good condition, with some dings and scratches, which are mainly situated at the back of the bracelet. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
The most intriguing thing about this bracelet, is that the circular portion which holds the amethyst, can be undone from the bracelet. It is secured with a screw, and the circular panel can be unscrewed and removed. It may be possible that this bracelet was originally been part of a set (possibly containing a brooch fitting and a pendant necklace fitting, as well as the bracelet fitting). The amethyst could have been attached to any of these fittings, to create a multi-functional piece of jewellery. Engineering such as this, was key in the Victorian era, and much of the convertible jewellery...
