The present bracelet is a very rare variation of the popular design for this period. During this time frame, snake bangle bracelets were designed using a unique coiling system which allowed them to be flexibly worn on the wrist. There were different sizes and variations some including stones, enameling and others which had differences in the length of the snake or number of visible coils. Many typically have a coil of about 3 to 5 while the present one has extra long workmanship to give it the effect of coiling entirely up the arm with 7 coils which during this time required much more workmanship and creative planning to create an extra long coiling system which would create a more high fashion and dramatic effect when worn. This technology was also patented and on many of these french snake bracelets you will find at the snake's tail as on the present example a French plaque with hallmarks, and Brevete sgdg meaning the mechanism is patented - likely referring to the gold link coil which allows for the bracelet to be so flexibly worn. The antique snake bracelet is mounted entirely in woven 18kt yellow gold and the head is very detailed as well with buff top ruby stones to represent the eyes of the extra long serpent and a carefully engraved head with various patterns applied on the face. The body which is set entirely in gold scales is also carefully detailed to give a lifelike effect while still affording its user the flexibility to twist on and off easily due to its uniquely designed steel spring core system. The bracelet is absolutely beautiful on the wrist as so few examples are available from this period with 7 coils so it is sure to be a conversation piece when worn. The bracelet is in overall pristine condition given its nearly 200 year old age although there are slight wear to the end tail just above the plaque which shows a very minor sign of patina which also adds to the authenticity of its antique status. In general, Snakes in Victorian times signified never-ending love, and was a popular gift for lovers as well as represented the notion of eternity.
