About the Item

Born in Massachusetts in 1935, Donald Claflin studied design at the Parsons School of Design in New York and began his jewelry career at David Webb. He began working for Tiffany & Co. in 1965, where he created his most iconic jewelry pieces, his collections debuting to high acclaim. Claflin's inspiration in jewelry came from popular children’s stories, whimsical creatures like dragons, while also having a love for the natural world. To create his incredible pieces, Claflin favored hard stones and materials like coral, lapis lazuli and ivory in addition to traditional precious gemstones. His work was often highly involved and costly to create, requiring the technical skills of master stone cutters, goldsmiths, setters and enamelers. In the end, all the attention to detail paid off as his creations are true masterpieces! Claflin parted ways with Tiffany & Co. in 1977 and found a starring role at Bulgari where he helped to revamp their style before his untimely death in 1979. This beautiful and truly unique Vintage bracelet is one of Donald Claflin's masterfully created jewelry designs for Tiffany & Co.! From the 1965-1970s, this fantastic piece is crafted in 18kt yellow gold and horn, and comprised of two symmetrical horse legs which form the body of the bracelet, each curving around the wrist. The horse legs meet each other in the center, but do not touch, allowing you to see the wonderful rich gold details that create the horseshoes. The hooves as well as the thinner part of each leg is portrayed by richly colored natural horn, creating a unique and interesting appearance. The inside of the bangle, horse "ankles" and horseshoes, along with two "X's" on each side of the bracelet, are crafted in vibrant 18kt yellow gold, showcasing Claflin's love of natural horn mixed with precious metal. The bangle is hinged at the back, allowing the piece to open slightly when placed on the wrist, and then immediately close around the wrist for safe wearing. Hand engraved on one side of the hinged back is "18K" next to the "Tiffany ©" hallmark. Accompanying the bracelet is an ad from an original Tiffany & Co. catalog from the 1970s which features the bracelet; please see images. This fabulous and rare bangle from a legendary jewelry designer, can be worn alone or stacked with other pieces and would make a very special addition to any jewelry collection! Without being stretched open, the inside of the bracelet (where a wrist would rest) measures approximately 2 1/8" wide and approximately 1 5/8" tall. The band surface width is approximately 1/2" wide at it's widest and 1/4" at its thinnest. The opening between the two horse hooves measures 3/8" wide.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the carved horn or yellow gold and the spring hinge is in perfect working condition.
