About the Item

Sculptural fish cuff-bracelet designed by Antonio Pineda (1919-2009). This is an exceptional and highly collectible vintage cuff-bracelet, created in Taxco Mexico by the renowned silversmith Antonio Pineda, back in the 1953. The iconic sculptural bracelet-cuff has been masterfully crafted as a three-dimensional skeletal fish, in solid .970/.999 sterling silver with polished and textured finishes. Antonio Pineda Antonio Pineda was a Mexican silversmith born in 1919 in Taxco, Mexico. He began his career at the age of 11 as an apprentice at William Spratling silver workshop. Pineda opened his own store in 1933 and became known for his modernist silversmith pieces that incorporated rare stones in unique contexts. In 1941 at the age of 22, Antonio Pineda opened his own workshop in his hometown of Taxco after working and studying with other notable artists and silver workshops, including William Spratling. His reputation was launched in 1944 when he participated in an international exposition in San Francisco at the Palace of the Legion of Honor, where his collection of some eighty pieces were bought entirely by Gump’s. This relationship continued for many years with Gump’s supplying the stones and Pineda designing and producing the jewelry. At his height in 1956, Pineda had established his operation of over one hundred and sixty craftspeople, creating jewelry and sculpture in two different workshops. Building influence from Pre-Conquest motifs to his more successful modernist aesthetic, his pieces are still sought after by collectors. His work became popular with American ex-pats and vacationers in the area, and he eventually signed an exclusive deal with the retailer Richard Gump. Pineda's work remained in high demand throughout his life, and he passed away in 2009. Weight: 62.25 Grams, (39.90 Dwt).
