About the Item
Panama-Pacific Exposition Panama channel bracelet cuff.
This is a very rare cuff bracelet created as a souvenir for the Panama-Pacific exposition, back in the 1915. The cuff has been crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver and decorated with a beautiful engraving depicting the Panama channel water lock at the Gatun Lake. The engraving is masterfully done showing the casemates, the trains, their rails and the lock's operating system. The Panama Canal Locks, which lift ships 25.9 m (85 ft) to the highest point of the canal in Gatun Lake and then lower them, were at the time one of the greatest engineering feats of their time, surpassed only by other stages of the interoceanic waterway project. There was no other reinforced concrete construction comparable in size until the construction of Hoover Dam in the 1930s. The total length of the lock structures, including the approach walls, is three kilometers (almost two miles).
Panama-Pacific International Exposition
The Panama-Pacific International Exposition, a 1915 world's fair in San Francisco, was a grand celebration of the completion of the Panama Canal and San Francisco's recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The fair, which covered over 600 acres, attracted nearly 19 million visitors and showcased technological advancements, international pavilions, and artistic displays. It's considered a milestone in San Francisco's history and a reflection of the United States' growing prominence on the world stage.

Jean Després
He was born in 1889 in Souvigny, Burgundy, from glass blower parents, Jean Després starts his apprenticeship with a Parisian goldsmith, friend of the family, in 1905. First an industrial drawer for the military aviation during World War I, he took over his parents’ shop in 1920 and launched his goldsmith and jeweler workshop. He revealed himself to be an innovative creator with a unique way to work metals, and with new drawn shapes never seen before. He participated to his first show in 1926 at the Salon des Indépendants. Many shows and exhibitions then followed, such as the Salon d’Automne, the Salon of Decorative artists, and the Tuileries Salon. Jean Després chooses massive shapes rather than the classical goldsmith ornaments and avoids the use of precious gemstones in his jewel collection. His jewel production is defined by necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings where metals are combined with ivory, lacquer, ebony, onyx and sharkskin. His goldsmith pieces are inspired by the aviation aesthetic, crafted using hammered metals, and ample, generous and modern shapes. In the 1940’s, Jean Després is nominated President of the Goldsmith Syndicate, after receiving the Legion d'honneur, in 1938. The artist’s works will be collected in France and worldwide, even after his death in 1980. (Maison Rapin...

Nanna Ditzel, born in 1923. Was a Danish designer graduated from the furniture department of the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. Has been studying under prof. Kaare Klint at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen. Nanna Ditzel is working with experimental and industrial design furniture, textiles, silver, faience and glass. Has experimented with the use of split-level living for indoors and outdoors. The ideas have been carried through in playgrounds, children libraries and showrooms. Freelance designer, she has a design office and showrooms in London. Nanna Ditzel started independent design office in 1946 together with Jorgen Ditzel. The co-operation lasted until the death of Jorge Ditzel in 1961.
Nanna Ditzel created many designs for Georg Jensen, mostly jewelry although she also created some hollowware. The relationship between the couple and the Silversmith began when Nanna decided to start designing jewelry as something she could do at home while her children slept. Soon after, a jewelry competition sponsored by A. Michelsen arose, and her designs had won first prize. Later on, in 1954, Finn Juhl, who was developing the 50th anniversary exhibition, passed the design work off for the exhibition to the Ditzels. Five pieces of jewelry were created for this exhibit, which were very well received. Further jewelry designs were created, and many of these pieces would go on to win various awards and prizes. In 1968, Nanna Ditzel remarried to Kurt Heide and relocated to London where they continued to work in the realm of design, establishing their own company Nanna Ditzel Productions Ltd. In 1986, her second husband passed away, and she moved back to Denmark, continuing her work. In recent years, Ditzel has focused mainly on furniture design, such as the Trinidad chair in 1993, however this design has also led to the further refinement for her jewelry pieces such as the bracelet #389 in 1994.
Ditzel has won many major awards during her long career and has had her work exhibited all over the world. She received the silver and gold medals at the Milan Tirennale (1954 and 1960), the Lunning Prize (with Jorgen Ditzel in 1954) and a gold medal at the International Furniture Design Competition in 1990, and the Thorvald Bindesboll Medal in 1999. She has also taken on the title of Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog, Honorable Royal Designer ( 1996). From Georg Jensen Hollowware...
