About the Item
In 1921 the young American architect William Spratling moved from his home state of Alabama to New Orleans for a professorship at Tulane University. He found an apartment in the then-dilapidated French Quarter at 624 Orleans Alley. A young unknown writer named William Faulkner would soon be his roommate. He went to Mexico in 1926 as a visiting professor and was told he should see the town of Taxco, for he might appreciate its architecture. Silver had been discovered in Taxco, Mexico in the 1500s and it had been a mining town for decades. But by the time Spratling visited it, Taxco was a veritable ghost town. Spratling returned to the United States after his teaching duties at the Mexican university ended but he did not forget about Taxco. In fact, he became obsessed. William Spratling had a vision that Taxco should once again be a silver town; a community of artists and craftspeople, all working with the native silver. Spratling had a special fascination with pre-Colombian art and architecture and he imagined making items in silver that featured design motifs from this period.
Spratling returned to Mexico in the late 1920s and the Taxco Mexican Modernist Movement was born. In very little time, Taxco became *the* place for celebrities to visit and be in the company of other creative explorers, plus shop for jewelry.
The simple silver and brass cuff bracelet you see on this page was created during William Spratling's first design period, which spanned the years 1931 - 1946. This early cuff rarely enters the market. I have never seen another for sale. It was created in his first space where he worked with silver, tin, copper, brass, wood and textiles. This humble silver and brass cuff bracelet is a precursor to all of William Spratling's most iconic designs, which makes it of exceptional importance.
The cuff can be dated to 1940 due to what is known as the WS "primary" mark (a logo or maker's mark), a secondary mark "MADE IN MEXICO" and a tertiary mark of 925 in his distinctive Art Deco font. 1940 was the last year Spratling used the "925" tertiary mark and the first he used the circle logo. While he did not typically use 925 silver for jewelry he did here either because of its strength or, more likely, because of the brass design elements. These had to be soldered to the silver, and 925 silver has a lower melting point than the finer 980 silver he normally used for jewelry, so the elements could more readily fuse.
Like the early sketches of Georgia O'Keefe, the earliest work of a genius is often the most fascinating.
The bracelet is 6 ½" with a 1 ½" gap. It fits my 7" wrist.
This is the missing piece in any serious Spratling collection. Or a phenomenal place to start.

24K Gold, Jade, Bangle Created with Ohio Steel, XL 77mm
By Augusten Burroughs
Located in Southbury, CT
I created this bangle with heavy gauge Ohio steel that I hand-work into shape. This bangle features one primitive-cut bluish-green natural and untreated jadeite bead from Guatemala, a teal green untreated jadeite bead from Burma (Myanmar), a "devil's work" double ring carved from a single piece of blue untreated (except for paraffin -wax), and a 4 gram ring of pure 24 karat yellow gold.
The interior diameter is 77mm, so it will fit an individual with a larger hand and wrist. I'm a 6'1" man with large hands and this bangle fits me perfectly.
The steel is 2.66mm thick, the round jade bead is almost 17mm, the gold ring 22.74mm, the primitive bead...

Chalcedony Bracelet, Arts & Crafts Style Circa 1970s
Located in Southbury, CT
This luminous blue and grayish-blue chalcedony bracelet was created in the Arts & Crafts style though it dates to a later era; probably the 1970s. This one-of-a-kind bracelet was completely handmade using natural highly translucent chalcedony gems that range in tone from faint blue to rich periwinkle. At 141 grams, it's a satisfyingly substantial bracelet that will not get lost on your arm.
The central flower-shaped arrangement is composed of one round 21mm chalcedony cabochon surrounded by eight oval and pear-shaped stones, along with two large 20mm x 17mm pear-shaped cabochons north and south. This collection of stones are soldered together as one piece that is curved to follow the arch of your wrist. On either side of this central design element are nine chalcedony cabochons, each bezel set and joined by hand-formed links. The links terminate on both ends at a row of 5 stones: two round, three ovals. The bracelet closes securely with a box clasp and safety latch. Because the central portion of this very large bracelet is fused, it's not a sloppy piece; the gems don't spin around on your wrist and become tangled. It retains its form and only the stones on the sides that are linked by chain can move freely. It's a clever design.
The bracelet measures 7 ½ in length and is 3 ¾ wide. So it should fit many but the largest wrists. The bracelet is marked 925 for the silver and has an unknown maker's mark I cannot identify.
Gorgeous, unique, and featuring the most distinctive blue in the gem world, this vintage chalcedony...
