About the Item

Circa 1780, this rare Georgian bracelet is a true collector’s piece. The 14k gold bracelet contains alternating rubies and diamonds, held in old rubover mounts that showcase the different shapes and sizes of the antique stones. The diamonds are primarily table cuts, with square tops; a few Rose Cut diamonds are interspersed throughout the piece. The diamonds alternate with round, faceted rubies, which have a variety of oblong shapes and hues of red and pink. The rubies are set in 14k gold, while the diamonds are offset with silver. The stones are held together by a delicate, hand-made chain. The centerpiece of the bracelet is the hand-engraved clasp, which is adorned with two larger rubies and a diamond held in a collet setting. The clasp connects with a tongue-in-groove, seamlessly becoming part of the piece. The bracelet contains 13 natural antique diamonds and 14 natural antique rubies. This piece dates back to the 1780’s, and the stones represented here were all hand cut, vary in shape and size, and are indicative of the age of the piece. We love that each stone is unique—it is part of what makes this piece, which is over two centuries old—so special. Because much of the stones are held beneath the gold, it is difficult to guess the total carat weight of the piece. The bracelet measure 6.75” and weighs 7.4 grams. Unmarked but acid tests as 14k gold.

Victorian jewelry is dated from 1837 to 1901. The era’s name was inherited from Queen Victoria who reigned during that time. Her significant input shaped the jewelry style of that time. To navigate in such a vast period, historians divide it into following parts: • The Early Victorian or Romantic • The Middle of Grand Victorian • The Late or Aesthetic Victorian Era Different materials, gemstones and techniques were popular specifically for each era. Some styles though remained in favor longer than during just one period. For instance, hair jewelry made its way through Romantic to Grand period. Snake and animal motifs were also in demand throughout the era. • Early Victorian jewelry As to the Queen influence, Romantic Period jewelry had well pronounced sentimental vibes. It was the time when young Queen Victoria was in love with her husband, Prince Albert. And the whole nation admired their relationship. Cameos, matching brooches, miniature portraits and lockets reflected the likeness of loved ones. After Albert’s passing in 1861, the Early Victorian Period ended, and The Grand era began. • Grand Victorian jewelry After the incandescent bulb invention in 1870s, diamond jewelry started thriving like never before. Diamonds, being placed under the electric light, revealed their dazzling nature and looked truly fascinating. Besides Victorian diamond jewelry...
