G.T. Marsh & Co. Blackened Steel, Diamond and Cultured Pearl Bracelet

About the Item

Designed and created by G.T. Marsh & Co. of San Francisco, circa the 1930s-1950s, this blued steel bracelet is set with cultured pearls and diamonds. It is designed as a series of alternating circular blackened steel links with stylized motifs possibly inspired by Japanese Mon symbols, each centering a cultured pearl, joined by arched diamond links. Streamlined and original, this sleek bracelet is modern and unmistakably Marsh. Item #: BA-21939 Artist: G.T. Marsh & Co. San Francisco Country: United States Circa: 1930s-1950s Dimensions: 8.25" length. Materials: 8 cultured pearls (measuring approximately 6.90 mm to 8.00 mm); 21 round-cut diamonds (approximate total weight 0.60 carat); Blackened Steel; White Gold Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes: George Turner Marsh was born in Australia, and was 15 years old when his family decided to emigrate to the United States. During the family's stopover in Yokohama, a large port city in the Tokyo region, the young man became enamoured of the culture, and stayed on for several years as an apprentice in a tea export/import firm. This gave him the knowledge and confidence to open a Japanese art gallery in San Francisco in the 1930s. Perhaps inspired by Japanese metalwork, Marsh began designing and creating oxidized steel jewelry, often set with stones favored by Asian cultures such as jadeite or cultured pearls, and highlighted by diamonds. He was instrumental in establishing the Japanese inspired gardens around the Golden Gate Bridge.
