About the Item

A fine, antique 19th Century copy of the Brooch of Lorn (or Lorne). In sterling silver with rock crystal and garnet cabochons. By the renowned jewelers, William Marshall & Co. of Edinburgh, Scotland. This brooch is a faithful reproduction of the fabled Brooch of Lorn with a large central rock crystal cabochon surrounded by 8 turrets each with garnet cabochon terminals and decorated throughout with granulation and wirework details. (This model notedly varies from the original in that it has garnets in the place of pearls.) Secured with a pin and C-catch. Together with its original hinged leather presentation box. Fully hallmarked to the reverse. Simply a wonderful Scottish Archeological Revival brooch! Historical Notes: Sir Walter Scott's 1815 "The Lord of the Isles" poem tells the tale that the original Brooch of Lorn was owned by Robert the Bruce and taken by Clan Macdougall in battle in 1306. Modern experts, however, now date the brooch to the 15th or 16th century and indicate that (despite legend) it could not have been owned by Robert the Bruce. The Brooch disappeared during the Covenanter Wars for nearly 200 years. With it's rediscovery in 1824, it was returned to Clan Macdougall. The Brooch or Lorn (and other related Scottish brooches) have been a longstanding interest of British Royalty. Princess Albert gifted Queen Victoria a gold copy of the brooch in 1842, and Princess Louise (fourth daughter of Queen Victoria) reportedly gifted a copy of the the Brooch of Lorne to her husband, John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll, as a wedding gift in 1871. Today, the original Brooch of Lorn is in the care of the Macdougall of Dunollie Preservation Trust and on display in the Kingdom of the Scots gallery at the National Museum of Scotland. Overall Condition: It is in overall good, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: There are some light bends to the pin stem. The box has some spots of obvious wear and some losses to the leather. Otherwise, there is some light edge wear, some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Maker: William Marshall & Co. Marks: Marked to the reverse with Scottish hallmarks for Edinburgh / Sterling / W.M. for William Marshall & Co. / K for 1891. Fineness: Hallmarked for sterling silver fineness.
