About the Item

After the Suez Canal was opened in 1867 a fashion was set off in jewellery design, commonly known as Egyptian Revival to commemorate that sensational event. This fabulous winged scarab brooch is a fine example for this fashion. The wings are framed by two snakes with entwined heads. The snakes are decorated with a chiselled pattern the patterned skin of the reptiles. Round facetted rubies have been set in the snakes eyes. The body of the scarab is an amethyst cabochon that has been carved on both sides. The scarab's eyes are gold mounted rose diamonds. The reverse of the scarab is engraved with hieroglyphs. Each wing is set with ten round facetted rubies. The feathers are painted with green and white enamel. In the first row rose diamonds alternate with the green enamel. The feathers of the outer row are decorated with gold granulation, the tips of the feathers are highlighted with white enamel. The brooch is marked with Austrian hallmarks for 14 K. On the reverse of the brooch a plaque has been applied to each wing stating a number 'No 14418 as well as a so far unidentified makers mark.

Egyptian Revival Plique A Jour Enamel Winged Scarab Insect Brooch Pin Art Deco
Located in New York, NY
A rare Art Deco Egyptian Revival masterpiece of a Winged Scarab Insect Brooch done in Plique a Jour Enamel over Silver. The Museum Quality brooch depicts a winged Scarab beetle, one of the signature motifs of the Egyptian Revival movement. The brooch is done with extraordinary Purple and Green iridescent Plique a Jour Enamel. Plique Enamel requires the skills of a master artisan to create. When finished, the Plique enamel creates a see through enamel which allows light to shine through, reminiscent of a stained glass window. This brooch is a masterpiece of the technique and one of the most beautiful pieces we have seen. The brooch pin is Silver with a gold wash. It dates to the Art Nouveau to Art Deco period, circa 1880-1920. It has its early C-clasp. The brooch could be easily converted to a pendant necklace if desired. Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass and is considered very challenging technically: high time...

Early 20th century Egyptian revival gold and enamel brooch
Located in Malmö, Skåne län
An early 20th century Egyptian Revival gold brooch, depicting a vulture centred with a faïence scarab, clutching lotus pods and surmounted with a cabochon ruby, polychrome enamel decoration overall and engraved to reverse, 3.5cm wide. One arrow missing. Revival is always happening in the jewelry world. The Indiana Jones inside all of us is always enticed by the buried loot of the ancients. It’s one of the reasons Egyptian Revival jewelry is so alluring. Luckily for jewelry connoisseurs the span of history that have laid way to an aesthetic resurgence and intense interest in all things Egyptian during the last two hundred years. Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign in 1798 ignited the West’s fascination with motifs we have all come to associate with Egyptian Revival—sphinxes, pyramids, palmettes, papyrus leaves. This curiosity was further stimulated by the excitement surrounding the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, after 10 years of construction, arousing a real revival of the Egyptian style, with jewelers specifically incorporating artifacts that were thousands of years old, faience in the shapes of falcons and scarabs, set into jewels framed by vermilion enamel and lapis lazuli. Some of the highlights in the 19th century timeline of Egyptomania include the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, displays at World’s Fairs and the moment when Cleopatra’s Needle...
