About the Item

Superb antique carved bog oak anchor brooch features a detailed anchor design with a rope wrapped around it, in excellent condition. The brooch is made from bog oak, a type of wood that has been preserved in peat bogs for thousands of years. The dark color of the oak is due to the high iron content of the bog water. Bog oak is often used to make jewelry, especially mourning jewelry. A bit of history: An anchor brooch, often crafted from materials like bog oak, carries sentimental meaning related to stability, hope, and safe harbor. In Victorian times, anchors symbolized steadfastness and faith, often given as tokens of affection or remembrance. The unique dark hue of bog oak, formed by years of submersion in peat bogs, adds a sense of history and enduring love to the piece. These brooches can serve as a reminder of a strong connection, a wish for safe travels, or a symbol of a loved one's unwavering support.
