VictorianVictorian 14K Gold Rose Cut Diamond Winged “En Tremblant” Insect Brooch

About the Item

This 14k gold diamond winged insect brooch incorporates “en tremblant”—a Victorian jewelry design element that uses a spring mechanism to allow for movement within the piece. “En tremblant” means “to tremble,” an apt description of the shimmering motion of the piece, that was popular with the upperclass in Victorian era France, often used in tiaras and brooches. The spring can be seen in this piece when viewed from the side, as the bug hovers above the pin. The brooch contains a beautiful array of diamonds, rubies, and an emerald. The insect’s wings are encrusted with Rose Cut diamonds that vary in size and shape to perfectly fit within the wings—from tiny pointed diamonds at the tips to larger rounds and ovals in the wider parts of the wing. The stones are carefully chosen and create a mosaic that showcases a beautiful selection of antique diamonds. The brooch is 14k, but topped with silver on the wings to emphasize the whites of the diamonds. The thorax of the insect is a bezel set green cabochon emerald, and the eyes consist of bezel set rubies. This piece, which comes to life with en tremblant movement, is magical; it looks great on any blazer and makes for a little treasure that is special to own. The brooch contains 40 natural antique Rose Cut diamonds that range from VS2-I in clarity and K-M in color. They are clear and sparkly, and catch the light nicely; the many different shapes throw off interesting faceted reflections. Rose Cuts are traditionally thinner stones, so it is harder to calculate their weight, but the piece contains at least 2.5 carats of diamonds. The brooch also contains two natural antique rubies and one natural antique emerald. The piece acid tests as 14k. It measures 1 3/16” x 1 3/16” and weighs 7.85 grams. Circa 1880’s.

Victorian 14K Rose Gold & Rose Cut Diamond Bracelet
Located in Venice, CA
A beautiful rose gold and diamond bracelet from the Victorian era. This piece of jewelry features 7 gorgeous rose cut diamonds that are arranged from the center in a descending order. The largest diamond at the center measures 4.9 mm in diameter and the smallest ones, at either end, measure 2.8 mm in diameter. Each diamond is held within 8-pronged, raised buttercup settings that individually conform to the rose cut diamonds and is foil backed. There are some very small dents along the edge of the bracelet, these are age appropriate for a piece that is 130 years old and are only a minor distraction to this pieces beauty. There is a lovely hand-made quality about this piece of jewelry. It has an original bifurcated design and at the center a row of multi faceted diamonds. The silver foil backs of the diamonds give the diamonds a reflective hue that is very romantic and remind us of candle light. The bracelet is in very good condition. Perfect for a 6.5 inch wrist or smaller, it adds a feminine touch to any dress. Tongue and groove clasp with a security chain. A makers mark can be found a the interior of the clasp where the bracelet closes shut. It appears to be the letter A...

14K Gold Victorian Rose Cut Diamond Drop Necklace with Bow
Located in Venice, CA
At the focal point of this elegant Victorian-era drop necklace are three antique diamonds suspended from a bow and navette shaped bar. The diamonds are Dutch rose cut, with layers of facets cut by hand, making each diamond one-of-a-kind with its own unique way of reflecting light. The largest, bottom diamond appears round, and the diamonds descend in size, with the middle and top diamond taking a more oval shape. The necklace has a 14k gold back and a silver front—a traditional way of mounting jewelry in the Victorian era. The beautiful diamonds rest in a silver backing, so the stones catch the light and reflect it brilliantly. The diamonds are topped by a bow, which contains seven smaller rose-cut diamonds, surrounded by millegrain details that add subtle texture. A transitional bar connects the bow to the teardrop section, and features an eighth diamond set in a navette shaped mount. The bow, navette, and diamond trio are articulated, so there is lots of movement while worn, adding to piece’s elegance. The necklace is circa 1890’s. Kirsten’s Corner has added an antique platinum chain...

14K Gold Envelope Shaped Mourning Locket. Brooch with Arrow
Located in Venice, CA
A love letter to a departed soul, this tender piece manifests as an envelope that folds over a pearl studded arrow and is sealed with a forget-me-not flower. Circa 1870, this early Victorian brooch is cast in 14k gold with a beautiful acid wash matte finish. The forget-me-not, a sentimental image often seen in mourning jewelry, consists of a chrysoberyl cat’s eye surrounded by six old cut diamonds bead set into its petals. The whimsical arrow is encrusted with eight pearls that look beautiful against the matte gold. On the back of the brooch, a portrait of a woman is held in an oval frame. She has braided hair, wears beautiful jewelry, and was clearly very loved by the brooch’s original owner. The blue-grey cat’s eye has lovely chatoyancy that shimmers as it moves, making the piece even more magical. Chatoyancy is an optical phenomenon seen in certain stones, caused by light reflecting off of parallel needle-like elements within the stone, this is the cat’s eye effect.  In addition, the chrysoberyl has a trait known as adularesence—a milky sheen or glowing light that seems to come from below the surface of the stone. The effect is caused by layers of orthoclase and albite that reflect and scatter light. The brooch measures 2” x 3/4” and weighs 10 grams. The chrysoberyl measures 3.25 mm. The six natural old cut diamonds measure 2.25 and equal .15 of a carat...
