Antique Japanese Shakudo Cufflinks with Floral Designs

About the Item

A stunning pair of antique Japanese Shakudo cufflinks, featuring intricate floral designs. Shakudo, a traditional Japanese alloy made of gold and copper, is known for its unique dark bluish-black patina, achieved through a process called rokusho, where a compound is applied to the piece and then heated to create the signature finish. Originally developed for use in Japanese armor and swords, Shakudo was banned by the Japanese government in 1876. As a result, artisans began turning their expertise to creating jewelry and other decorative objects, preserving this beautiful and highly skilled craft. These cufflinks are a rare example of Shakudo craftsmanship and may have originally been crafted as decorative objects before being converted into cufflinks. The design features finely detailed floral motifs that showcase the artistry and tradition behind Shakudo. Marked: Sterling with gold accent Materials: Shakudo (gold and copper alloy) Sterling silver Gold accents Dimensions: Approx. 1 1/2 inches x 1/2 inch (each) Combined weight: 16 grams Condition: In good vintage condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age. No major flaws or damage are noted, and the cufflinks maintain their beautiful patina and intricate detailing. These Shakudo cufflinks are a rare find, combining Japanese tradition with timeless craftsmanship. Ideal for the discerning collector, they offer both a fascinating historical narrative and an exquisite example of Japanese metalwork.
