FORDITE ‘Detroit Agate’ Cufflinks, 1970's

About the Item

Straight from the motor city! A pair of 1970's cufflinks created with a material dubbed as Fordite also known as ‘Detroit Agate’. Though it looks like something organic created by Mother Nature, Fordite is actually polished layers of enamel paint collected during the automotive manufacturing process which was then cut and finished to resemble stone. Though it has been around since the 1920’s, it really started to gain popularity in the 1940’s with the advent of automobile paint color options. The painting process has since changed so in effect, Fordite is becoming a rare 'stone' and in many ways offers a visual history of American automotive pop culture. This pair of cufflinks combines shades of brown, green, yellow, blue and just a touch of red which were colors popular in the early 1970's vehicles. Jewelry items made from Fordite are true pieces of Americana akin to wearable Folk Art. Outfitted with chrome metal hardware. CONDITION Very good condition. MEASUREMENTS Each cufflink measures .75" wide and .75" tall x 1" deep including the hardware. (The Fordite alone measures .5" deep.)
