About the Item

A pair of highly translucent double cabochons of luminous lavender jade are wrapped two swirls of gleaming 14K yellow gold in this late Mid-Century (circa 1970s) jadeite jade clip-on earrings from the legendary retailer, Gump's of San Francisco. For decades, Gump's was known around the world for the impeccable quality of their jewelry, especially their fine pearls and jade. Authentic Gump's jade jewelry never needs a lab certificate stating that it's natural and untreated because Gump's never sold anything but the very finest jade. And these earrings are no exception. The fact that each cabochon is a double cabochon tells you something. A double cabochon simply means that both the top side and the underside of the cabochon are convex. This makes the cabochon deeper, trapping more light and maximizing the luminosity. And the jade stones here are mesmerizing. Depending upon the light, the color can be pale and subtle or intense. I've tried to capture this effect in the images but it's even more dramatic in person. As you wear these earrings throughout the day, they will change as the light changes. They will always look beautiful; rivaling or surpassing the finest pearls for sheer luminosity. But they kind of settle into their deepest tone toward the end of the day. I'm a second-generati0on collector of jade and my grandmother in Lawrenceville, Georgia, was just obsessed with Gump's jewelry. Long before I knew my multiplication tables, I knew the price of every item Gump's sold in their San Francisco flagship store. My grandmother collected their mail-order catalogs and I devoured them the way my cousins poured over National Geographic hoping to catch a glimpse of a naked person. Many women do not favor clip-on earrings because, clip-on earrings. They are the lesser of the two evils, the first being screw-backs. But Gump's being Gump's had a proprietary clip-on mechanism you won't find on other earings. Turn the earring upside down and the closure looks like a stiletto heel. So I refer to this as the Gump's stiletto clip and it's comfortable. I wore this pair of earrings one day, all day, while working and I forgot I had them on. Even wearing my wedding band drives me slightly crazy. But these are not uncomfortable clip-on earrings. The jade stones measure approximately 13.40mm x 9.90mm and are 6.15mm deep. Each earring weighs approximately 3.60 grams. Each earring measures 15.43mm x 11.60mm. It's rare to find vintage Gump's jade jewelry in the finest colors and their best designs. That's because Gump's jade gets passed from one generation to the next. Lavender jade is the second most-prized and most-valuable color of jadeite jade after emerald green. The value of Gump's jade jewelry increases steadily. It's in high demand and the supply is limited because it's all being hoarded. Guilty. These amazing and pristine earrings come in their original box.
