About the Item
This rare and unusual pair of antique Jet Mourning earrings really stand out!
They are conversion earrings, originally starting out life as buttons.
Made from inky black Whitby jet, the earrings are an oval shape with an impressed pie crust type edge.
Each earrings has a 9kt yellow gold monogram embellishment to the front, the letters IMO, standing for In Memory Of, the letters adorned with creamy seed pearls, one of these is facing the right way up and the other not, it's not clear if this was intentional or not, it's not vet easy to notice immediately but is a point to note.
The earrings have later 9ct gold ear wire fittings for pierced ears.
Of course being a conversion piece means these are truly a unique pair of earrings, perfect for the Mourning collector or earring enthusiast.
Marks and era:
Victorian era, c1870s, Unmarked, tests as 9ct gold on the gold components.
Condition:
Fair used condition overall, signs of use and wear, some general surface wear commensurate with age, original holes on the reverse where they were buttons, ear wires later addition and marks to the jet can be seen where these have been fitted, one IMO upside down.
