About the Item

Hattie Carnegie (1886-1956)--one of the leading American entrepreneurs of made-to-order and ready-to-wear fashion for four decades--began producing costume-jewelry parures around WWII to accessorize her high-end clothing, such as for her evening gowns created by progressive designers Norman Norell, Pauline Trigere or James Galanos. These unsigned climber earrings with dangles from a Carnegie-commissioned set are In the style of one of her early jewelry paruriers Julio Marsella, who made similar but signed pieces that included gold-gilt mesh metal for other American costume-jewelry brands such as Hobe and his own eponymous label between 1945-1957. This bright yellow-gold clip-fastened pair with his complex construction are adorned with sparkly foiled clear crystals whose prong settings are unusually linked through soldered bands. Each of the three five-stone L-shaped band dangles a highly textural ball that is either fluted or has filigree that surrounds a crystal-embedded rondel. As the parures made before Carnegies death included a brand stamp or cartouche on at least one of the matching pieces, those that were unsigned with foil tags that were removed can be identified by distinct findings or construction that are also found on the signed piece. On these earrings such findings include: the cupped many-pronged crystal at the top of each earring (see our other listing for the floral starburst brooch with matching settings for blue and green crystals); the undulating rondelle whose crystals are caged in curved settings like eyes; the ear-clip with oval depression; and the flat-bar base that is also on the underside of some ring settings. We think the trend-setting designs that Carnegie commissioned for her boutiques, and later for high-end department stores like I.Magnum and Neiman Marcus under the brand Hattie Carnegie Originals, are the most undervalued fashion and costume jewelry as she was the American counterpart to French Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel during the first half of the 20th Century.

MiriamHaskell WWII FrankHess Layered Rhodoid & Crystal Montee Climber Earrings
By Frank Hess for Miriam Haskell
Located in Chicago, IL
Beginning in 1939, American Miriam Haskell asked her first designer since 1926 Frank Hess to sparingly use metal in their costume-jewelry collections during WWII while war materials were needed. So not unlike the Spring/Summer 2024 floral appliques designed by Balmain artistic director Olivier Rousteing, hand-crafted rose-motif plastic never looked more beautiful in the 20th Century than such eye-catching glossy creations as these ballet-pink clip earrings by Hess. In this reflective and sparkling pair of lightweight slightly asymmetrical climbers, shiny film-like rhodoid is hand-cut, layered in three dimensions for irregular shadows, and riveted with clear roses-montees to a thin silver metal frame, which replaced Hess' characteristic wired Russian-gilt brass frame while still resembling his earlier construction (see our other Haskell listing for an early double fur-clip chain lariat). The earring clips, with tiny holes that were used for unsigned Haskell...

Antique Diamond and 14K Gold Silver Dangle Earrings
Located in Rotterdam, NL
An antique 19th century pair of yellow gold earrings set with rose cut diamonds crafted in a silver setting. These antique Dutch dangle earrings have a beautiful design with leaves and a flower with a large diamond in the middle - while the stem and leaves feature smaller diamonds. The diamonds in the earrings have a diameter between 1.5 - 5.1 mm. These rose cut diamonds are quite clear in color and are foiled to give them more sparkle. The allure, the subtle shine of this cut, the imperfect shape of the diamond give this cut its own style. The brisures or ear hooks are attached to it at a later period. Rose cut can be counted among the oldest diamond cuts. Unlike brilliant cuts, the rose has no volume at the colet, no point downwards. The underside of the rose is flat. The top is spherical facet cut. The play of light is less than that of the brilliant cut. Roses were widely used in antique jewelry and now in antique style jewelry...
