Roman Marble 'Red Porphyry and Green Porphyry' and Sterling Silver Earrings
About the Item
These earrings are handmade by our goldsmiths, using ancient Roman marbles, red porphyry and green porphyry from Greece, called by the ancient Roman marble workers "Serpentino". These fragments come from coatings of Emperors villas , where they were used to embellish floors and walls.
The red porphyry , punctuated with white or pink inclusions, had its quarries in Egypt, and was already used in the Ptolemaic era.
In Rome, with Trajan, the extraction and use of porphyry became usual. It was used in sculpture, for statues, sarcophagi, floor inlays, so much that Diocletian made of it the exclusive ornament of his palaces.
The Green Porphyry , or "Serpentino", is a marble with irregular spots of light green or yellow color; its quarries were on the Sparta road. In Rome the Serpentino was already used in the Augustan age and, with the last of the Flavi emperors, became imperial property. This marble was considered of great value and was very popular and appreciated.
