C1880 Pique Pose Earrings in a Long Pyramid Shape

About the Item

Charming prism Victorian pique earrings with round tops long prism shaped bottoms and inlaid on 2 sides with gold flowers and beehive decoration. Pique jewelry was a uniquely Victorian craft, and its origin lies with the French Huguenots in the sixteenth century who developed the craft and made beautiful objects from tortoiseshell. Following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, the French Huguenots were forced to relocate, and they did so, throughout Europe and America and where they were much valued for their skilled artistry. These earrings could have been made in France or England, both countries were known for their pique-work. Pique involves steaming and piecing fine sheets of tortoiseshell into exquisitely translucent objects and inlaid with patterns and designs the size of pinheads. And this is what gives the technique its name, pique, meaning "to pierce". Pique artisans were perfectionists and only used the hawksbill tortoise and a few other varieties in their jewelry and objects. The earrings are approximately 2.5 inches tall and about ½" at their widest point.
