About the Item
Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There are generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore large amounts of jet jewelry. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a "boom period" moving far beyond simple mourning.
Absolutely beautiful jet earrings from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! These stunning earrings being with a circular jet surmount, which features an interconnected ellipse-shaped jump ring. The other end of the jump ring features a large teardrop-shaped piece of jet, which is smooth and simple. An oval-shaped carnelian cabochon is located within the center of the jet link, and displays a lovely reddish-orange hue. Each earring is completed by simple sterling silver wires. A unique pair, these earrings would be perfect for any jet collector!
Measurements: The earrings hang 2 1/4" long (including the wires), have a width of 3/4" at their widest point, and have a depth of 1/4".
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the jet or carnelian stones. The ellipse-shaped connectors and earring wires are both secure and in working order.
