About the Item

Loose Hackmanite Weight: 1.40 Carats Dimension: 7.7 x 7.7 x 4.5 Mm Colour: Purple Shape: Round Treatment: Non Origin: Afghanistan Hackmanite is a unique and rare variety of the mineral sodalite, noted for its remarkable tenebrescence, or reversible photochromism. This means that hackmanite can change color when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light or sunlight, and revert back to its original color when the light source is removed. This fascinating property makes hackmanite a prized gemstone among collectors and gem enthusiasts. Discovered in 1896 in Greenland, hackmanite is named after the Finnish mineralogist Victor Hackman. The gemstone typically exhibits a range of colors, from pale to deep violet, and sometimes a pinkish or white hue. Under UV light, hackmanite can transform into an intense, vivid purple or pink. When the UV light source is taken away, the stone gradually fades back to its original color, a process that can take minutes to days depending on the intensity and duration of the exposure. Hackmanite is primarily found in regions such as Myanmar, Afghanistan, Canada, and Greenland. Its crystal structure belongs to the cubic system, and it has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6, making it relatively soft compared to other gemstones. This softness requires careful handling and appropriate settings in jewelry to avoid scratches and damage. The gemstone’s tenebrescence is due to the presence of sulfur within its crystal structure, which reacts to UV light. Additionally, hackmanite exhibits fluorescence, often glowing orange or red under UV light. The unique optical properties of hackmanite not only make it visually captivating but also a subject of scientific interest, particularly in the study of mineralogy and crystallography. In jewelry, hackmanite is often cut into cabochons or faceted stones to highlight its color-changing properties. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, hackmanite is also believed to have metaphysical properties, including enhancing emotional balance and aiding in stress relief. Its combination of rarity, unique optical characteristics, and purported metaphysical benefits make hackmanite a gemstone of great allure and fascination.
