Antique Niello Double Sided Locket Pendant with 2 Bales, circa 1890

About the Item

A lovely Victorian Niello locket with a pleasing graphic design on its face and back in black enamel and silver. This most unusual locket would look wonderful hanging from your silver chain. The locket has a bold Wiener Workstatte style (English: Vienna Workshop) graphic design on both front and back and a striped pattern along the round edge. Every part of this wonderful locket is adorned with a pattern in enamel. Note the modern looking vertical stripes adorning the edges of the locket, and how the stripes compliment the bold black wave pattern of the locket. The locket can be worn on both sides. The maker of this locket thoughtfully added not one but two gold bales to the top of the locket, so that it balances properly when hung from a split ring and lays flat with the locket face displayed outward. Pendants with only one bale tend to twist and turn, but thanks to the thoughtful design of the 15k double bale (those Victorians were very clever), this locker pendant lies perfectly flat. The niello technique derives from the Latin form of niger, meaning black. The jewelry artist would start with a design a pattern on paper, then engrave the pattern on silver and by filling the recesses with a silver, copper, lead and sulphur alloy he would create a stencil resulting in a strikingly modern looking pattern. Niello has a very characteristic look, and once you have seen it, it is easy to recognize.
