A rare Galaltith, glass and gilt metal necklace, Louis Rousselet, France, 1920s.

About the Item

A simple and iconic single row necklace, from the celebrated artisan Louis Rousselet. A rare find with four interlocking Galalith ovoid beads mixed with glass and gilt fittings, graduated for extra style. Unsigned but immediately recognisable by these unique and so Deco interlocking beads. Coming in varying colour ways, the black and cream express the French Art Deco style perfectly. While a wonderful piece of history and French artisanal workmanship, this necklace is also very easy and simple to wear, across a whole spectrum. Louis Rousselet [Paris 1892-1980) was the head of one of the most important pearl manufacturing workshops during the 20th century. He was apprenticed as a glass bead blower at 8 years old and continued to work until 1975. From 1922 until 1935 he made necklaces of Galalith beads, in the Art Deco style, and between 1945 and 1975, he supplied jewellery for Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jacques Fath, Jean Patou, Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain. He also created many dramatic adornments for Josephine Baker, Mistinguett and other stars of the celebrated Folies Bergeres. Rousselet jewellery is highly regarded, and very recognisable, with a very distinctive and delicate style and manufacture of its own.
