About the Item
This is an antique Victorian gold link belcher chain necklace set with two dangling tassel pendants. Each round link has a polished decorative grooved link woven together into this gorgeous antique strand. The belcher chain necklace is made of 14 karat yellow gold and the lovely tassels are adorned with rope decor on the border and crafted in 14 karat gold.
There are a number of different theories about the origins of the belcher chain, although it is generally accepted that this style of chain originated in 19th century Britain.
One theory is that the name is derived from belcher scarves and rings that were popular during that period. These accessories, often shortened to 'scarf rings', are still used to secure lightweight scarves around the neck.
It is believed that the belcher chain was influenced by the series of interlocking rings designed to hold the scarf in place and was simply named after the style.
Another theory is that Belcher chains are named after boxer James "Jem" Belcher, who held the title of "Champion of All England" from 1800 to 1805.
The chain necklace is in very good condition and of high quality. Hallmarks are present. The necklace has a push pin closure that works well. The length of the necklace is circa 39.5 centimeters and weighs 9.2 grams.
The belcher chain necklace will be gift-wrapped in a black and gold jewelry box.
