Edwardian Necklace of Precious Topaz, Ruby, Natural Pearls and Diamonds

About

Looking fresh out of season 1 of Downton Abbey, this mint-condition Edwardian jewel features a long, tear-drop shaped faceted precious topaz measuring approximately 23.36 mm long by 7.77 wide and totaling approximately 3.82 carats. The topaz is a golden peach color and dangles freely from its silver-topped 18K yellow gold mounting which is capped with a small rose-cut and bezel-set diamond. The mounting itself swings from beneath an elegant pair of commas, united at their apex by a tiny bezel-set ruby of perfect color. Each silver-topped comma design element is set with rose-cut diamonds. Topaz and diamond-embellished flourish then are suspended from a magnificent Colombian emerald measuring approximately 6.5 mm by 5 mm and totaling approximately .85 carats. The emerald-cut emerald has excellent color and is eye-clean. A beautiful gem. The emerald is bezel-set within an 18K yellow gold box on either side of which are a pair of natural, iridescent 3.5 mm pearls. Eight additional natural pearls are stationed along the dense and beautifully made 18K yellow gold rolo chain. While the spring clasp is a slightly later replacement, it is a nice large size, works perfectly and makes putting the necklace on or taking it off an effortless affair. The chain measures 18" and the emerald, ruby, diamond and topaz pendant is 1.5" in length. Through dainty and feminine it may appear, this is a sturdy and well-made necklace that has passed through time stoically, with none of its beauty compromised. A necklace like this would have rested upon the lace-front of a white dress in the summer. I was lookikng at the tiny ruby poised between the emerald and the topaz. It's about 1.5 mm in diameter. It's hardly larger than a poppy seed. Today, we think of such a ruby as small. But the original owner of this necklace would have enjoyed the possibility of the ruby being entirely overlooked at first and noticed only upon further, closer inspection or when the sunlight suddenly struck it and sent a pin-prick of bright red into the eyes. The ruby wouldn't have been considered "small," but rather, "subtle." The society into which this necklace was introduced and worn was one with layers upon layers of social decorum, rivaled only by the layers upon layers of clothing that was worn. Certain things were not spoken of directly but rather tangentially. Nuance mattered a great deal. Restraint was an art form. Quality was to be assumed. For us, drones are the new thing. For the people of the Downton Abbey-era, it was the Rolls Royce. We stare at our phones; they had conversations imbued with innuendo. It can be easy to view the people of this era as having had rather perfect lives but of course that isn't true. They merely had quite perfect jewelry. You have to feel this necklace to believe it: the way the dense, buttery-gold links of the necklace chain glide across your fingers, never kinking or snagging; sheer, time-smoothened perfection. And the way pearls are the color of a full moon; silvery but iridescent. Only natural pearls can look so lustrous after more than a century. The spectacular emerald is the color of spring itself; the topaz is truly pure gold in gemstone form. What a wonderful necklace this is to wear while you sit with a friend and talk about art or family or; dreams or big, big plans. The Edwardian era was one of great opulence as well as optimism, both of which are expressed quite flawlessly in this exquisite —and immaculate— bejeweled necklace from this fascinating era.
