Erte Art to Wear: The Complete Jewelry edited by Marshall Lee (Book)

About the Item

Throughout his 97-year life Erté never ceased to astonish. After dramatic success in several careers, he began, in his mid-80’s, a whole new career in elry design – without ever diminishing his extensive creation of graphics, sculpture, and objets d’art, or his work in theatre and industrial design. Erté was born Romain de Tirtoff, scion of an aristocratic Russian family. Considered the father of Art Deco, from 1916 to 1937 he contributed to Harper’s Bazaar 250 cover designs as well as some 2500 other drawings. He was active also in fashion design and the design of sets and costumes for stage productions ranging from the Folies Bergère to the Paris Opéra. At 76 he began creating lithographs and serigraphs, whose popularity boosted him into an even higher orbit of fame and appreciation. Incredibly, a decade later he launched a program of sculpture that proved equally successful. This experience gave Erté the confidence to go forward with his longtime desire to create wearable art elry at a relatively modest price. It was not until 1979 that Circle Fine Art embled the people and facilities needed to carry out his intricate and complex ideas and a major program of elry creation was undertaken. Once again, Erté’s instinct proved correct; the elry was received enthusiastically. ERTÉ: ART TO WEAR/THE COMPLETE ELRY contains superb colour photographs, all but a few made specially for this book, of 328 pieces of Erté elry, plus 179 additional elry design drawings he made or approved. The photographs are accompanied by commentaries, as well as by design drawings and technical diagrams, some with comments in Erté’s own hand. The introduction by Louis Zara gives an overview of Erté’s life and career, a survey of elry design by other artists, and critiques of many of the els in the book. Included are photographs with captions explaining the technique of elry making. 414 illustrations: 201 colour, 17 duotone, 196 monochrome. 192 pages. Hardback. 2040 grams.

Van Cleef & Arpels (Book)
Located in North Yorkshire, GB
Van Cleef & Arpels is a French luxury jewelry company.[ It was founded in 1896 by the Dutch diamond-cutter Alfred Van Cleef and his father-in-law Salomon Arpels in Paris. Their pieces often feature flowers, animals, and fairies, and have been worn by style icons and royalty such as Grace Kelly, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Diana, Princess of Wales, Ava Gardner, Farah Pahlavi, Eva Perón, Elizabeth Taylor, the Duchess of Windsor and Queen Nazli of Egypt. The Dutch diamond-cutter Alfred Van Cleef and his father-in-law, Salomon Arpels, founded the company in 1896. In 1906, following Arpels’s death, Alfred and two of his brothers-in-law, Charles and Julien, acquired space for Van Cleef & Arpels at 22 Place Vendôme, across from the Hôtel Ritz, where Van Cleef & Arpels opened its first boutique shop.[6] The third Arpels brother, Louis Arpels, joined the company in 1913. Van Cleef & Arpels opened boutiques in holiday resorts such as Deauville, Vichy, Le Touquet, Nice, and Monte-Carlo. In 1925, a Van Cleef & Arpels bracelet with red and white roses fashioned from rubies and diamonds won the grand prize at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts. Alfred and Esther’s daughter, Renée (born Rachel) Puissant, assumed the company’s artistic direction in 1926. Puissant worked closely with draftsman René Sim...

Henri Vever: French Jewelry of the Nineteenth Century by Henri Vever (Book)
Located in North Yorkshire, GB
Vever’s La Bijouterie Française au XIXem Siècle was first published in France between 1906–08: it has been the bible of all jewelry experts, buyers, sellers, scholars and historians ever since. Only 1,000 copies were originally produced, and it has been out of print for many years, appearing only rarely in the auction houses where it fetches very large sums. This volume – the first ever complete translation into English – includes over 1400 illustrations: photographs, sketches for jewels and prints from fashion magazines. 136 colour photographs of jewels now in the Musée des Arts Decoratifs are new to this edition. All the great and now more obscure jewelers are included in the text and illustrations: Alphonse Fouquet, Boucheron, Falize, Froment-Maurice, Cartier, Chaumet, Georges Fouquet, Gaillard, Vever, Lalique, and many many more. The discussion in the text is not only of the individual jewels and types of jewelry, but also includes many entertaining anecdotes about the jewelers' relations with their customers and with society in general. Being himself a jeweler, Henri Vever...
