Antique Empire Silver Long Guard Chain Pansy Pensez à moi Sentimental Jewellery
About the Item
This unusual long silver chain was hand crafted in 1810-1815 ca. Two different types of ornamental links alternate to make up this Empire sautoir, the French word for a long silver chain. The links are joined by plain oval silver rings. A rectangular clasp joins the two ends of the chain. The clasp is decorated with a blue and green enamelled pansy within a blue enamelled oval frame. The lower edge of the frame has written the words 'a moi'. The French word for pansy is pensées. The word pensées derives from the words penser for thinking or pensée for thought. The image of the pansy was often used in its sentimental ambiguity to deliver a hidden sentimental message and the therefore image spells pensez à moi, think of me.. The sautoir is impressed with a french lozenge shaped makers mark and 800 for the silver content and a moon sickle.
