BABOON IN ANCIENT EGYPT - THE GOD THOTH
In Ancient Egypt, baboons, particularly the hamadryas baboon, held a revered position, often associated with the god Thoth, the god of wisdom, and the sun god Ra. They were also seen as a manifestation of the god Babi, the god of virility.
Thoth's Embodiment: Baboons were a common representation of Thoth, the god of wisdom, often depicted as a baboon scribe.
Sun God Ra's Connection: Baboons were also linked to the sun god Ra, potentially due to their morning vocalizations and stretching postures, which were interpreted as praising the sun.
Babi, God of Virility: Babi was a deity with a baboon head, associated with virility and strength.
Sacred Animal: The hamadryas baboon was considered a sacred animal, and mummified specimens were often found in tombs and temples.
As you explore the intricate details, consider the cultural context in which this amulet thrived—where symbolism and spirituality were interwoven into daily life. With provenance from the Secret Eyes Gallery in New York during the 1970s-1980s, this amulet offers a tangible connection to both the ancient past and a more recent era of art appreciation. Acquiring this piece means owning a tangible link to the rich tapestry of Egyptian history and the vibrant art scene of 20th-century New York.
The amulet pendant is 1 1/8 inches (28mm) tall including the bales. Without the bale the Baboon is 24mm tall and is 15mm wide and 9mm deep at the base.
The 14 Karat Gold bale is a later addition.
The pendant weighs 3.9 grams.
