About the Item

This rare Ancient Egyptian Faience Amulet Pendant depicts the Goddess Sekhmet the Lion, the healing patron of physicians. The faience lion crafted between 700-300 BC, is a miniature masterpiece. The lion amulet is created from fine green-blue Faience. In archaeology, faience is used to describe a non-clay based ceramic, often with a blue-green glaze. SEKHMET LION Sekhmet is the daughter of the sun god, Ra, and is among the more important of the goddesses in the Egyptian Pantheon. Sekhmet acted as the manifestation of Ra's power, the Eye of Ra. Sekhmet is said to breathe fire, and the hot winds of the desert were likened to her breath. Sekhmet also has a healing aspect. She was seen as a protector of the sick and a patron of physicians. She was called upon to ward off disease and heal the sick As you explore the intricate details, consider the cultural context in which this amulet thrived—where symbolism and spirituality were interwoven into daily life. With provenance from the Secret Eyes Gallery in New York during the 1970s-1980s, this amulet offers a tangible connection to both the ancient past and a more recent era of art appreciation. Acquiring this piece means owning a tangible link to the rich tapestry of Egyptian history and the vibrant art scene of 20th-century New York. The amulet pendant is 17mm tall including the bale. Without the bale the lion is 15mm tall and is 22mm wide and 8mm deep at the base. The 14 Karat Gold bale is a later addition. The listing is only for the pendant. The chain is only shown for display.
