About the Item

Indulge in a rare museum quality Ancient Egyptian Faience Amulet Pendant depicting the God Shu. Shu was the god of light, peace, lions, air, and wind. As the air, Shu was considered to be a cooling, and thus calming, influence, and pacifier. The faience Shu crafted between 700-300 BC, is a miniature masterpiece. The Shu amulet is created from fine green-blue Faience. In archaeology, faience is used to describe a non-clay based ceramic, often with a blue-green glaze. The pendant bale is hand hammered 14 Karat Gold. The exquisite Shu God Amulet is a testament to ancient Egyptian artistry. The pendant is of extraordinary design with intricate details and fine quality. The over 2000 year old amulet showcases the skill of ancient Egyptian artistry. It is so special to find jewels from the Egyptian period and this example is in extraordinary condition with superb design and a wonderful depiction of the God Shu. SHU GOD Shu, the son of the creator and sun god in the Heliopolitan creation myth, represents the principle of air. Shu was responsible for securing the space of the universe; therefore he also represented the life principle. Amulets of Shu became popular in the Late Period. This amulet represents Shu in his standardized form. He is kneeling on his right knee with his left knee drawn up. Both arms are raised (to lift up the sky), and he wears a long wig and a pleated kilt. Shu (Egyptian "he who rises up") was one of the primordial Egyptian gods. He was the god of light, peace, lions, air, and wind. As the air, Shu was considered to be a cooling, and thus calming, influence, and pacifier. I have included a photo of the very similar Shu amulet in the collection of the renowned Walters Museum in Baltimore. As you explore the intricate details, consider the cultural context in which this amulet thrived—where symbolism and spirituality were interwoven into daily life. With provenance from the Secret Eyes Gallery in New York during the 1970s-1980s, this amulet offers a tangible connection to both the ancient past and a more recent era of art appreciation. Acquiring this piece means owning a tangible link to the rich tapestry of Egyptian history and the vibrant art scene of 20th-century New York. The amulet pendant is 1 1/4 inches (30mm) tall including the bales. Without the bale the Shu is 24mm tall and is 16mm wide and 11mm deep at the base. The 14 Karat Gold bale is a later addition. The listing is only for the pendant. The chain is only shown for display. The pendant weighs 2.6 grams. Provenance: Ex Secret Eyes Gallery New York 1970's-1980's

Egyptian Revival Brown Faience Scarab Pendant with 14K Gold Mount
Located in Venice, CA
During the early 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and introduced what is referred to as "Egyptian Revival Jewelry." The first Egyptian Revival period began around the 1820’s, inspired by the unearthing of ancient Egyptian ruins during that time. Images such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics became popular motifs in fashion. Pieces were often crafted using a material known as Egyptian Paste or "faience", which is the oldest form of non-clay glazed ceramic and usually found in a range of blue and green colors.  In the 1920’s, there was another unearthing of treasures, making the trend popular once again. This scarab pendant is from that era—the third Egyptian Revival period. The scarab is a brown colored faience bead with tan overtones in its recesses that delineate the shape of the beetle. There are hieroglyphics on the back of the scarab. At the bottom of the scarab is a round 14k gold ball that extends as a wire through the bead and forms a bale at the top. The pendant measures 1 “ from the bottom of the ball to the top of the bale. The scarab measures 11/16” x 1/2”. The bale measures 5 mm. The piece weighs 2.55 grams. The gold is unmarked and acid tests as 14k. The scarab is in excellent condition for its age and is ready to hang on a chain of your choice. We have other sizes and colors of scarab jewelry...
