About the Item

This rare Ancient Egyptian Blue Faience Bead and Carnelian Rabbit or Hare Amulet necklace, crafted between 600-300 BC, is a masterpiece of ancient Egyptian artistry and design. The rabbit is an extraordinary ancient egyptian amulet carved from Carnelian Agate. The details within the rabbit are just superb. The rabbit is fully carved on both sides. Carving hard stone gems required the skills of the finest artisans. The ancient Egyptian rabbit is a treasure. The blue beads are created from fine Faience. In archaeology, faience is used to describe a non-clay based ceramic, often with a blue-green glaze. Blue faience beads are the most treasured of the ancient faience beads and these are of superb color and size. The clasp is a later hand hammered 14 Karat Yellow Gold clasp. In ancient Egypt, the rabbit, or more accurately, the hare, was associated with deities, particularly the goddess Wenet (also known as Unut) and the god Osiris. The hare was revered for its speed, keen senses, and ability to survive in the desert, and its image was used in hieroglyphs and amulets. Hare amulets were worn for protection. The exquisite Hare Amulet is a testament to ancient Egyptian artistry. The pendant features an amulet of the hare hand carved in Carnelian Agate of extraordinary design. The intricate details and fine quality of the over 2000 year old amulet showcase the skill of ancient Egyptian artistry. It is so special to find jewels from the Egyptian period and this rabbit, hare example is in extraordinary condition with superb design and a wonderful depiction of the revered animal. As you explore the intricate details, consider the cultural context in which this amulet thrived—where symbolism and spirituality were interwoven into daily life. With provenance from the Secret Eyes Gallery in New York during the 1970s-1980s, this amulet offers a tangible connection to both the ancient past and a more recent era of art appreciation. Acquiring this piece means owning a tangible link to the rich tapestry of Egyptian history and the vibrant art scene of 20th-century New York. The necklace is 17 inches long. The hare amulet is 1/2 inch (13mm) tall and is 3/4 inch (18mm) wide and 7mm deep at the base. The blue faience beads range from 7mm to 10mm long. The clasp is solid 14 Karat Gold.
