About the Item

Thirty-six carnelian beads, twelve of cylindrical form and twenty-four round beads and twelve round gold beads and a carnelian effigy of a man (presumably a chief) pendant. The stone pieces are said to be from the Tairona people of Colombia, South America. They have been made entirely without the use of metal tools by the use of abrasives, drills and string saws. The pendant is 2.9 cm in height and 1.85 cm wide at the shoulders. It is 1.55 cm thick, from from to back. It is drilled through at the neck for suspension; the drill hole is 4 mm at the outside and tapers towards the center. The back is flat. It is made from a slightly pinkish orange carnelian. The hands are held in front of the body; the head is tilted slightly upwards with the chin forward giving the figure a confident proud demeanor. There are twelve cylindrical tubes of carnelian, the largest with a diameter of 8.75 mm. The lengths of these are 3.1 cm; the drill holes are 3.75 mm in diameter. The smaller pair next to the pendant are 7.25 mm and 8.25 mm in diameter and they are 1.3 cm and 1.45 cm in length. The smallest cylindrical bead at the back is 1 cm in length and 6.9 mm in length. Similarly, the round beads are all about 6 mm - 7 mm in diameter and 4.25 mm – 3.5 mm in length with drill holes of about 2 mm. The round gold beads are 7.5 mm in diameter and 8 mm in length, being slightly oblate in shape. The gold clasp is a hook and eye and beading tips, the hook made from a strip of gold with the end rolled up at the end of the hook. It attaches to an eye with the attachment circle at right angles to the other circle which attaches to the beading tips. The beading tips are spheres with a strap of flattened wire attached to the bordered rim on a raised disc to either side of the openings. This hides the knots at the end of the cord on which the beads are strung. The beading tips continue the look of the spherical beads and are also incorporated into the design of the clasp. The necklace is 23 inches (43.2 cm) in length. The necklace weighs 47.5 grams.
