Rare and very unusual piece of Egyptian - revival styled necklace with seven genuine emerald Green Scarab Beetles set into gilt Silver frames accented with 6 Seed Pearls. These shimmering Tortoise beetles once were the Victorian times' species of choice to stand in for genuine Scarabs - the dung beetles that the Ancient Egyptians admired. The Beetles have an enchanting iridescence to their outer shells, glinting with different tones of Greens depending upon the light and angle with edges and back sides glimmering with dark copper metallic Red on Green. Each Beetle is prong set into solid Silver hand-wrought gilt silver frame that was custom-made to fit each unique insect. Anchor type chains with V -lock with futures typical for late 19th - early 20century. The Necklace is 42 cm long closed . Weight: 11.5 grams Condition: fine used, all beetles in fine shape with no damage. Natural patina on gilt Silver parts. There is a small ring attached to the bottom of the central beetle to attach some additional payment of your choice. During the 19th Century, there was a craze for bizarre and exotic oddities like Beetles, monkey teeth, tiger claws, and hummingbirds which were collected all over the world and set in fine jewelry.
