About the Item

Known as "mutton fat", a natural milky white tremolite nephrite jade 10mm-long hand-carved oval cabochon is prong set on this antique Edwardian-period convertible tiny brooch, which is designed in a delicate Art-Nouveau-style like one by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Shown in our closeup in natural indoor light, the stone has brighter white vein-like fibers on the surface and points of desirable colorful impurities. Also photographed in warm-tone studio lights, the stone is surrounded by intricate milgrain applique on its white-gold thread-like filigree top. The open wirework is anchored to an unsigned open-back frame that includes a miniature c-clasp and hinge brackets for a hand-set pin. As its pin does not extend beyond its frame, the versatile small brooch can be used as a one-inch-long pendant or ring-band top. It can also be fastened onto an evening-glove finger--without necessitating a larger-size ring for that infrequent purpose. Given the antique age of the brooch, its stone likely came from Xinjiang, China, the origin of Heitan River jade.

Antique Amuletic Dozen RockCrystals CagedRing Medieval Style Gilt Bronze Pendant
Located in Chicago, IL
This antique amuletic bronze framed pendant cages a dozen 7mm-diameter single-cut rock crystals that each feature a table-cut decagon crown, deep pavilion, 21 facets and uncut girdle, while the culets range from off-center to blunted. They are tightly set within four linked rings to overlap at the same angle in a sparkling single row. Seeming to retain a little of its original yellow-gold gilding on just the interior, the frame that surrounds each of the four sections of three crystals enables them to reflect pale-yellow-and-lime light when the pendant is viewed from certain angles. Each of the crystals can be manually rotated. Suggesting French heritage, the Medieval Frankish culture in northern France made jewelry in similar segmented or openwork shapes of wheels or whorls, which were worn as gem-decorated disk-shaped brooches or gold-caged rock...
