Antique Victorian Gold Vinaigrette Scent Box Pendant

About the Item

This is an antique Victorian gold vinaigrette box pendant. The vinaigrette is richly engraved with a floral decor. Vinaigrettes were used for solid fragrances and a sponge was placed under this beautiful openworked grille. The sponge was soaked in a vinegar-based perfume - behind the rack there is still a used piece of sponge, but it is odorless. The date '1847' is engraved on the inside of the lid of the box. Being able to drown out the smell of muddy streets and open sewers with sweet-smelling scents was essential for anyone who could afford it. Vinaigrettes were therefore important accessories for the sophisticated lady or gentleman. Not only could it disguise the smells of the streets; many also believed that pleasant smells would protect them from disease. The vinaigrette box pendant is in very good condition and of high quality. The box measures 31 x 19 x 13 millimeters and has a nice heavy weight of 11 grams. Hallmarks are present and visible. We will wrap your pendant box beautifully in a black and gold jewelry box.
