It was to last until 1918. It was the second largest European country after Russia and was an important technological adopter. Increasing industrialization saw a growth in a middle class based in the cities. There was a demand for jewellery and jewelers looked back in history for inspiration. One source of inspiration was the Renaissance and one 16th century artist who was particularly influential was Hans Holbein. Jewelers in these two countries produced ornate pieces of jewelry in the form of large pendants covered with enamel, often white enamel decorated with black dots, coloured gemstones and pearls set in gold, silver or silver gilt. Some of these pieces are hallmarked, many are not. The quality can vary a lot but always easy to be identified.. Austria-Hungary Empire This is often referred to as the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was a constitutional dual monarchy and great power in Central Europe between 1867 and 1918. It was formed with the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 in the aftermath of the Austro-Prussian War and was dissolved shortly after its defeat in the First World War. Austria-Hungary was ruled by the House of Habsburg and constituted the last phase in the constitutional evolution of the Habsburg monarchy.
