Early 20th Century Briolette Black Jet 14K Gold Cannetille Pendant
About the Item
An early 20th century faceted black jet briolette cannetille pendant. This pendant is created with 14 karat gold cannetille work caps at the top and bottom. The top and bottom of the pendant is adorned with spider-like rosette ornaments and groove globule design below. The bail at the top makes it easy to hang the pendant on a necklace chain.
Cannetille typically features fine gold wires or thinly hammered sheets. Jewelry with cannetille was very popular in the 1900's, particularly in the 1820's and 1830's. Motifs included tendrils, scrolls, coils, beehives and these spider-like rosette ornaments.
These kinds of jewelry represent a varied and rich historical Dutch cultural heritage, worn by women in some parts of the Netherlands when they were in mourning. The jewels were part of the Dutch regional costume and tradition around 19th century and early 20th century.
