Measurements: 40 mm by 35 mm (1.57 x 1.38 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with several French hallmarks. History: For centuries, Ancient Egypt has held the fascination of the public and continues to inspire artists and designers alike. Between the 1860 and 1890, ancient cities were discovered, such as Troy, Pompeii and Alexandria. Archaeological excavations in Egypt, Greece and Rome, discovered artistic pieces of these ancient cultures. These fabulous discoveries, stimulated cultural trips to these countries, popularly called "grand tour". Being the case that the enthusiast visitors bring back small objects, like souvenirs to be assembled into jewelry. The starting point of these trips were in the cities of Rome and Venice. Ankh, is a cross shape but with a teardrop-shaped loop in place of a vertical upper bar. The origins of the symbol are not known, although many hypotheses have been proposed. In art the symbol often appeared as a physical object representing either life or substances such as air or water that are related to it. It was especially commonly held in the hands of ancient Egyptian deities, or being given by them to the pharaoh, to represent their power to sustain life and to revive human souls in the afterlife. The ankh was one of the most common decorative motifs in ancient Egypt and was also used decoratively by neighbouring cultures. Coptic Christians adapted it into the crux ansata, a shape with a circular rather than oval loop, and used it as a variant of the Christian cross. The ankh came into widespread use in Western culture in the 1960s, and it is often used as a symbol of African cultural identity, Neopagan belief systems, and the goth subculture. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box. Condition: The overall condition of this piece is very good. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold. The enamel and the diamonds are secured in the settings. This piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity. INVENTORY REF: P010322ASNM/.3653

This beautiful necklace is emblematic of the evocative 1920s Egyptian Revival aesthetic and was made in France. Condition Report: Very Good - A slight kink in the chain and a tiny bend at the base of one of the charms. This is consistent with age and use and does not detract from the appeal of the piece. The Details... Although un-hallmarked, this necklace is most likely constructed from silver gilt. It features a delicate herringbone chain. Suspended from the chain is a selection of Egyptian inspired charms. There are Ankhs, Lotus flowers and Hamsa hand symbols. There are also three postage stamp charms detailed with skiff boats on the Nile and the goddess, Hathor. The necklace fastens with a bolt ring and measures 38cm in length. A Short History... In 1922, Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun and, thereby, ignited a Western fascination with Ancient Egypt which permeated the Arts. Jewellery designers created heavily stylised profiles of people and hieroglyphs taken from tomb walls, as can be seen in this necklace. Reviving Egyptian...
