About the Item
This stunning, handmade turquoise and 14-karat yellow gold necklace and pendant were made by a jewelry artist who once trained in architecture. Larry Golsh, of the Pala Mission and Cherokee peoples, is one of the last living greats of the post-Loloma generation.
Designed as a long, tapered rectangle, the pendant features three jagged lines beneath a vivid turquoise stone. The rugged texture of the tufa-cast gold. This impressive modernist jewel weighs 98.5 grams. The pendant measures 4” x 1.25”, and the chain, 22 inches long, complements the pendant’s bold yet elegant design.
In perfect condition, this striking necklace is suited for both men and women.
Larry Golsh is considered one of the icons of contemporary Native American jewelry. He was raised on the Pala Mission reservation near San Diego, CA, and many of his designs are inspired by prehistoric rock art in this region’s hills and canyons.
Initially a student of architecture and sculpture, Golsh began making jewelry after meeting the world-renowned Hopi jeweler and artist Charles Loloma in 1969. The two had several encounters.
Golsh is best known for his tufa-cast jewelry and for using gold in his Native American-inspired designs. He embellishes his jewelry with a dazzling array of gemstones, including diamonds, lapis lazuli, coral, onyx, and Russian charoite.
Golsh was the first Native American to study at the Gemological Institute of America and with master jeweler Pierre Touraine. His work is in the collections of museums, including the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian in Santa Fe, and he has won awards at the prestigious Heard Museum Indian Market.
