About the Item

Late 19th to early 20th century Necklace, Angami people, Nagaland, India Shell, carnelian, bone, glass beads This substantial necklace from the Agami people has seven rows of carnelian, glass and long shell beads that are attached to pecked bone spacers, which anchor nine rows of glass tube beads. The two smooth cut conch shells have four pecked rows at the upper edge. Inner circumference is 27 inches; the large shell is 7 inches in length and the entire necklace weighs nearly 2 pounds. The large shell would have been worn at the back of the neck, but it could be worn either way. Ex private San Francisco collection
