About the Item

This beautiful red coral horn comes from the Italian sea and then was mounted with an 18 Kt gold crown and a sapphire by our goldsmiths. Going back in time, we begin to find traces of coral in the 3400 BC; the populations of that historic period, used small objects with the form of an horn to signal the presence of a house’s nucleus as well as for the defense, the protection and the fertility of those that were surrounded by the protective / propitiatory element (that is coral’s horn). When traveling to Naples, you will find red horn-shaped talisman charms called “cornicelli” hanging everywhere in the streets. A cornicello is a twisted horn-shaped amulet or charm which can be made of anything, including gold, silver, bone, or carved from red coral. During the Middle Ages, the color red had a double meaning: it symbolized victory over enemies and it symbolized good luck. In Naples, it is recognized as a symbol of good luck and protection. Those who acquired such an amulet would be blessed with good luck. The horn was symbol was used by those ancient people as the bringer of good fortune as well as fertility. As a matter of fact, during that time, fertility was considered a blessing to the community. Likewise, the bull’s horns were also a symbol of male strength and virility. During ancient times, the horn was used as a votive offering to the Goddesses Venus and Luna. The red coral often used to make the charm is sacred to Venus, goddess of love, and silver is sacred to Luna, the goddess of the moon. The red color and phallic shape are also related to the male fertility god Priapus. The" cornicelli" reaches back over many centuries, demonstrating the persistent value of good health and family which is so fundamental in Italian culture. The tradition says that a horn also protects places: apartment, car, business. Generally one or more horns are used for personal protection, environmental protection and then .... they are also something nice to wear!

Antique Italian Pink Coral and Sterling Silver Letter Opener
Located in Roma, IT
This silver and antique coral letter opener was handmade by our talented goldsmiths, who used a coral branch from Sciacca, the Sicilian town famous for its corals. The Sciacca Coral has unique origins in the world: it is closely tied to the exceptional history of the Ferdinandea Island, which is a submerged volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily, between Pantelleria and Sciacca. As of today the summit of the Ferdinandea Island remains between about 6 and 8 meters below the Mediterranean Sea level. Its most recent appearance as an island was in July 1831. In the late 1831, in a shoal (called later ”Bummolo” by the fishermen of Sciacca) located around 30 miles from Sciacca, a new island emerged in a fiery hell from the depths of the Strait of Sicily. However, one year later, the island sank back beneath the waters and definitely disappeared in the Strait of Sicily. Over time, thanks to the exceptional microclimate determined by the frequent volcanic phenomena along the slopes of the submerged volcano, huge coral...

Victorian 18K Gold Capped Large Coral Large Cornicello Pendant
Located in Venice, CA
Circa the Victorian era, this beautifully polished piece of natural branch coral has an organic form and rich salmon color. The coral has a waxy patina and glows the way only Victorian coral can. It has a lovely elongated shape, capped with an 18k gold repeating leaf foliate motif. The growth patterns and natural details of the coral are visible, and because a piece of branch coral this size is hard to find, this is a rare piece. Acquired on a recent trip to Amsterdam, we believe this piece to be Dutch made. It was originally a seal that had never had a cypher, or monogram, added to it. We thought it would make a perfect pendant, so we added an 18k gold bail with a matte finish to match the antique nature of the piece. The 18k gold cap, intended to be a cypher, is hand-carved with bright cut work—creating a pattern of leaves from tiny punched in cut marks. The gold has a great patina that we left in tact, as it is part of the antique charm of the piece. The large pendant has presence on the neck. It looks great alone, but also stacks beautifully with other charms. It is pictured here on our Signature Handmade Dog Bone Link Chain...
